Have you ever watched a movie and noticed a character’s hairstyle or wardrobe is different from one scene to the next? A script supervisor works closely with the director and director of photography to ensure continuity from scene to scene. This intensive course is designed to give students a complete overview of the script supervisor’s role in film and television, from pre-production through production. The basic theories and rules of filmmaking are covered and the skills required to script supervise are taught through lectures, demos, and hands-on training. Students will learn how to work effectively with the script and director, what to convey to the film editor, and how to maintain a script-supervising book. After completing the course, students will have the tools to begin a career in script supervising.

Instructor: Randi Feldman

Next Class: TBD

Week 1: Monday – Thursday (5:30 pm – 9:30 pm), and Saturday (8:00 am – 4:00 pm)

Week 2: Monday – Thursday (5:30 pm – 9:30 pm)

All sessions are now being held at the new SI/S3 Studios and SI FIT educational facility located at Stautzenberger Institute in Allen Park (16630 Southfield Road, Allen Park, Michigan 48101).

This class is designed to teach each student the basic skill sets necessary to work in an entry-level position in the Grip or Electric Departments and to become a certified Generator Operator on Feature Films, Television, and Commercial Productions. In addition to 40 hours of classroom time, graduates can be placed in film production or industry-related internships upon completion of this course. After the initial internship, there may be additional internship or job placement assistance based upon previous internship/classroom performance. The program begins with an overview of the Hollywood and Independent Film Production Model and Organizational Chart, so students can understand what each department does and how all departments work together during a production. We then introduce the student to the duties and responsibilities of the typical entry-level position on a film set, the Production Assistant (“PA”). PA’s are required to have a working knowledge of the tools of communication and organization on a film (call sheets, location maps, base camps) set as well as understanding the chain of command and basic on-set etiquette. A student will typically be required to succeed as a PA before being offered an opportunity to move up to the grip and electric departments on a film set. We will then move to a hands-on introduction to the Electrician’s tool set, including generators, distribution boxes and cable, then moving onto tungsten units, HMI units, florescent units, LED units, and specialty units. A special emphasis will be given to the safe and proper operation and maintenance of Generators, which is a job skill in short supply currently in Michigan. Moving onto the Grip department, we will introduce the student to c-stands, flags, scrims, diffusion, gels, and other tools to shape light. The building of frames, bounce tabs, grifs, overhead rigging, block and falls, and other basic Grip techniques will be covered. We then address camera platforms including tripods, dollies, cranes, camera cars as well as specialty rigs like sliders, jib arms, car mounts, and steadicams. Learning to use these tools properly and safely is the educational objective here. In our final class, Students will participate in a “model” digital production, working side by side with industry professionals in order to gain hands-on experience utilizing the tools we have learned. Students will rotate through all three job categories so they can understand how these disciplines work together on a film set. Students will also have an opportunity to meet with a representative from IATSE Local 38 to hear their perspective on union membership. The Grip/Electric/Generator Operator Class is taught in 40 hours, over a two-week period. Classes are now held at the new SI/S3 Studio Classroom in Allen Park and may include field trips to film sets and relevant suppliers here in Michigan.

This class is an overview of the job opportunities and skill sets required to seek entry-level employment in the Camera Departments of motion pictures, commercials, digital media and industrial films. These jobs include Camera Operator, First Assistant Cameraman, Second Assistant Cameraman, Loader, and the Director of Photography. In addition to 40 hours of classroom time, students are guaranteed a film production or industry related internship as part of this program. After the initial internship, there may be additional internship or job placement assistance based upon previous internship performance. We begin the course with an introduction to the Camera Department. The course will consist of lectures and demonstrations, focusing on the tools of the cinematographer including cameras, lenses, filters, exposure meters and film stock. There will be hands-on instruction in the proper use of the various tools of the camera department as well as basic cinematography techniques and procedures. Student will be presented with the basic terminology of the Camera Department. At the conclusion of this course the student will be able to demonstrate their understanding of the basic cinematography terminology and principles, including cameras, lenses, depth of field, exposure, color temperature, filters and film stock. Throughout this course, we will explore the specific duties of the Director of Photography (D.P.), the Camera Operator (C.O.), the First Assistant Cameraman (1st C.O.) (Focus Puller), the Second Assistant Cameraman (2nd A.C.) (Clapper/Loader), and the Loader (optional position on larger multi-camera productions). We will hear from guest speakers who are experienced crew members in each specialty, and learn the specific skill sets required, including the potential entry points to each craft. We will develop an understanding of each of these crew positions, what their typical day on a set involves, and what specific training is required in each craft. Special emphasis will be given to the chain of command in each department, the skills, tools and procedures utilized by each craft, and the performance expectations of a crew member in each of these jobs. Students will participate in an 8 hour, hands-on “model” shoot where they will work side by side with industry professionals in each department. Students will discuss media selection as well as the various camera options. Students will prepare each scene and monitor how their efforts translate to the screen as the shoot progresses. This will enable students to experience how each craft within the Camera Department works together to prepare a scene for filming and film the actual scene. Following the filming, students will have the opportunity to critique each element, and refine their techniques. The Introduction to Camera Department Class is taught in 40 hours, over a two-week period. This class will be taught at our new SI/S3 Studio in Allen Park and may include field trips to film sets and relevant suppliers here in Michigan.

Next Class: NEW DATE: TBD

Week 1: Monday – Thursday (5:30 pm – 9:30 pm), and Saturday (8:00 am – 4:00 pm)

Week 2: Monday – Thursday (5:30 pm – 9:30 pm)

All sessions are now being held at the new SI/S3 Studios and SI FIT educational facility located at Stautzenberger Institute in Allen Park (16630 Southfield Road, Allen Park, Michigan 48101).

This class is designed to provide an extensive overview of production accounting for individuals that have some accounting experience and are interested in developing their career in the fast growing film and television industry here in Michigan. This film industry training class offers students the ability to develop the skills required to become qualified crew members on a feature film, television and commercial production. In addition to 40 hours of classroom time, graduates can be placed in a film production or industry related internship as part of this program. After the initial internship, there may be additional internship or job placement assistance based upon previous internship performance. A student will typically be required to succeed as a PA before being offered an opportunity to move in to the accounting department in an entry level position as an accounting clerk. We will then move on to providing a broad overview of all functions and responsibilities of the accounting department from setup, budgeting, cost reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, petty cash, purchase orders, payroll, per deim, banking and knowledge of signatory guilds and unions. Other topics include related software, production insurance, labor laws, production tax credits, rebates and refunds. Most importantly, explaining the role of the accounting department and its fiduciary responsibility in protecting the company’s assets by identifying and evaluating risk management issues. The Film Production Accounting Class is taught in 40 hours, over a two-week period. This class will be held at our new SI/S3 Studio Classroom in Allen Park and may include field trips to production offices and working sets currently in production in Michigan.

Week 1: Monday – Thursday (5:30 pm – 9:30 pm)

Week 2: Monday – Thursday (5:30 pm – 9:30 pm), and Saturday (8 am – 4 pm)

All sessions are now being held at the new SI/S3 Studios and SI FIT educational facility located at Stautzenberger Institute in Allen Park (16630 Southfield Road, Allen Park, Michigan 48101).

This class is an overview of the job opportunities and skill sets required to seek entry-level employment in the Art Departments of motion pictures, commercials, digital media and industrial films. These jobs include Locations, Props/Set Dressing, Wardrobe, Hair, and Make-Up. In addition to 40 hours of classroom time, students are guaranteed a film production or industry related internship as part of this program. After the initial internship, there may be additional internship or job placement assistance based upon previous internship performance. The course begins with an overview of the Hollywood and Independent Film Production Model and Organizational Chart, so students can understand what each department does and how all departments work together during a production. We then briefly introduce the student to the duties and responsibilities of the typical entry-level position on a film set, the Production Assistant (“PA”). We will then move on to an introduction to the Art Department which includes, Locations and Sets, Production Design, Props, Set Dressing, Set Decorating, and Actors Physical Appearance (Wardrobe, Hair, Make-Up).

The Art Department ultimately executes the vision of the Director, and works under the supervision of the Production Designer, who is responsible for the overall “look” of the film. We will then explore the duties of the Location, Props, Wardrobe, Hair, and Make-Up departments specifically. Students will participate in an 8 hour, hands-on “model” shoot where they will work side by side with industry professionals in each department to scout and dress a location, prepare wardrobe, make-up and hair for a group of actors, and see how their efforts translate to the screen as the shoot progresses. This will enable students to experience how each craft within the Art Department works together to prepare a scene for filming. Students interested in pursuing the Hair or Make-Up crafts should either already have received specialized training in their area of interest, or should be planning on taking that training before applying for those positions in the film industry. This course will only address the adaptation and utilization of these skills for the film industry. The Introduction to The Film Art Department Class is taught in 40 hours, over a two-week period. This class will be taught at the new SI/S3 Studios in Allen Park and may include field trips to film sets and relevant suppliers here in Michigan.

This class is designed as an in-depth exploration of potential employment opportunities in the Feature Film, Television, Commercial, and Digital Media fields. The State of Michigan’s tax incentives
have been attracting many film and television projects to the State; this class will serve as a guide to the thousands of jobs being created in these industries, with an emphasis on the practical strategies necessary to pursue careers in these fields. This film industry training class offers students the ability to develop the skills required to become qualified crew members on a feature film, television, and commercial production. In addition to 40 hours of classroom time, students are guaranteed a film production or industry related internship as part of this program. After the initial internship, there may be additional internship or job placement assistance based upon previous internship performance. This class is recommended as the initial class to become involved and employed in Michigan’s rapidly growing feature film industry. It is recommended that following successful completion of this Overview Class, students enroll in one of the job specific classes. The class begins with an overview of the Hollywood and Independent Film Production Model and Organizational Chart, so students can understand how films are made. We then delve into each major production department, including:

Production (Producing, Production Managing, Coordinating, Production Assistant)

Casting (Principal and Extras)

Location (Scouting and Managing)

Camera (Loading, Assisting, Operating, Video Assist Operator, Data Manager)

Sound (Mixer, Boom Operator)

Grip and Electric (Dolly, Crane, Rigger, Gaffer, Best Boy, Electric)

Art Department (Props, Dressers, Set Builders, Carpenters, Painters)

Stylists (Wardrobe, Hair, Make-up)

Transportation and Support Services

Post-Production (Editing, Mixing, Digital Effects)

Students will learn from working industry professionals in each of these departments, developing a thorough understanding of each department on a production, of the job descriptions, required skill sets, and points of entry into each field. Students will also participate in a “model” digital production, working side by side with industry professionals in order to understand the film making process and to gain hands-on experience. The Film Industry Overview Class is taught in 40 hours, over a two-week period. Classes are held at the new SI/S3 Studio Classroom in Allen Park and may include field trips to the working sets of productions currently filming in Michigan and the gear/equipment houses that support the Michigan film industry.
