Award-winning director Larry August of Avalon Films fame has over 25 years experience in the TV, film and commercial arenas. A DGA director since 1990, Larry’s focus has been primarily on spots and promotional film projects both nationally and in his home state of Michigan. In addition to serving as lead instructor for the FIT Film Industry Training program, he is also an adjunct professor at College for Creative Studies in Detroit.
Through the monsters, gore and special effects, Robert had the class at full attention. Robert discussed the art of special make-up effects and what goes into applying it to the cast. He explained that special effects can be digital or real. Make-up, skulls, prostheses and more go into the making of a truly scary movie. Robert showed a DVD of his work that had everyone on edge.
Stephen provided an overview of the responsibilities of the camera department including camera/steady cam operator, 1st & 2nd asst., dolly, loader, camera intern and P.A. He provided real life examples of the various elements in the camera department.
Sandy is an experienced production accountant who taught in detail what it takes to be a production accountant in the film industry. She helped describe the skills that are needed and the progression of jobs on a film set and most importantly in the film accounting department.
Rob is an experienced key grip and described the requirements and job description of being a grip or gaffer. He explained in detail what skills are needed, what equipment is used and safety precautions.
Patrizia made the class open their eyes to the details in life. She encouraged everyone to notice colors, lighting, forms and shapes in day to day life. “Production Designers are observers”. Patrizia also recommended everyone to draw/sketch anything and everything but show no one. Good practice for the future.
